April 11, 2003

NORFOLK, VA -- The #18 Old Dominion women's lacrosse team upped its conference mark to 5-0 on the season to stay atop the CAA standings as they downed Drexel, 15-7, this afternoon on a soggy Foreman Field. The Lady Monarchs were led by the 12-point effort of junior midfielder Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA) with six points and six assists, setting an NCAA single game-high for the 2003 season.

The Dragons fall to 6-5 overall and 0-4 in CAA play. The Lady Monarchs improved to 9-3 overall.

The Lady Monarchs got onto the board first with a Molly Coane (Bayshore, NY) goal less than two minutes into the game for the early 1-0 lead. Drexel would tie the game up at the 24:40 mark of the first half with Dragons' leading scorer Katrina Rand netting the first of her team-high three goals. However, that would be the closest Drexel would come as Old Dominion went on to net six unanswered goals taking a 7-1 lead with 11:29 remaining in the half. Laurie Bean and Rand would add back-to-back goals for Drexel with little over 10 minutes remaining, but the Lady Monarchs defense would keep the Dragon offense at bay the rest of the half. Old Dominion closed out the first half of play up 9-3. Wosczyna had three goals and four assists through the first 30 minutes of play, including the game-winner at the 4:09 mark.

The second half of play saw Old Dominion outscore the Dragons, 6-4. Wosczyna poured in goal number five of the afternoon less than a minute into the second half and then was followed by junior midfielder Kelly Kanara's (Kennett Square, PA) first goal of the 2003 campaign, giving Old Dominion a 11-3 edge with 24:17 left to play. The Dragons' scored three unanswered goals, including back-to-back tallies from Colleen Rocks and Bean's second goal of the game, to pull within five, 11-6, midway through the half. The Lady Monarch defense would only allow one more Drexel goal, Rand's third goal, with 28 seconds left.

Wosczyna's 12 points are the most in a single game thus far by a NCAA Division I player. She surpasses her previous-high of 10 recorded against American and William & Mary.

Junior attack Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD) also added in four goals for the Lady Monarchs in the victory. Wosczyna also led the squad in groundballs with six and draw controls with three. Coane scooped up five groundballs in the win and also registered a team-high three caused turnovers.

The Dragons' were led by Rand's four points on three goals and an assist. Rocks and Bean each added two goals apiece, while Jamie Connahan recorded two assists. Rand also led the team with three groundballs, while Connahan had a team-high two caused turnovers.

In goal, Old Dominion's Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) had 10 saves in 60 minutes of play. Drexel's Shirley Sarker made 12 stops in net.

The Lady Monarchs will close out the home portion of the 2003 regular season schedule when they host the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens in a battle for first place at noon on Sunday, April 11th. The game will be the annual scholarship match with the $5.00 admission to benefit the Intercollegiate Foundation for Women's Lacrosse Scholarships.
