April 2, 2002

NORFOLK, VA -- Sophomore Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoniexville, VA) ignited for a season-high nine points on five goals and four assists as the Old Dominion women's lacrosse team defeated William and Mary, 12-6, on the Tribe's home turf in Williamsburg, VA this afternoon. The victory, which improves the Lady Monarchs to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the CAA, was the first against the Tribe since a 6-3 victory in the CAA Tournament in 1995.

William and Mary wasted no time in getting onto the scoreboard jumping out to a 2-0 lead less than a minute into play. However, the Lady Monarchs quickly changed the pace by scoring three times in three minutes giving Old Dominion a 3-2 edge with 23:32 remaining in the first half of play. Junior Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) scored Old Dominion's first goal of the afternoon at 26:46, with Wosczyna tallying her first of four assists in the game. The tandem then switched places as Wosczyna scored and Hensil was credited with the assist to tie the game at 2-2. Sophomore Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD) then lifted the Lady Monarchs to a 3-2 lead with her unassisted tally at the 23:32 mark. Both defenses held until William and Mary scored back-to-back goals within a minute's span with about seven minutes left to take a 4-3 lead into the half.

Old Dominion dominated the second half of play, outscoring the Tribe 9-2. Senior Jennifer Heister (Fayetteville, NY) tied the game at 4-4 less than two minutes into the half, as Old Dominion opened a five goal-scoring barrage. Wosczyna assisted on the next two Lady Monarch goals by Hensil and Heister before cutting apart the William and Mary defense for four consecutive unassisted goals giving Old Dominion a 10-5 advantage with just over 10:00 left in regulation. Heister and Hensil scored again for the Lady Monarchs in the closing minutes. The Tribe's two goals came at the 19:41 and 6:48 marks, both at the hands of Schneider, as the Lady Monarchs defense recorded nine caused turnovers on the afternoon.

Wosczyna led all scorers with her five goal, four assist outing. Heister finished the afternoon with three goals, while Hensil added two goals and assist. Rodriguez tallied two goals and senior Kendra Finger (Boyertown, PA) was credited with an assist on the final Old Dominion goal. William and Mary was led by the three-goal effort of Evans.

In net, sophomore Beth O'Leary made six stops between the pips, while Tribe goalkeeper, Sydney Richards, recorded four saves.

The Lady Monarchs return to action this weekend when they travel to Boston, MA for their final non-conference match-up with Boston University on Saturday, April 6th. Game time is slated for noon.
