March 26, 2002

NORFOLK, VA (March 26, 2002) -- Old Dominion junior Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) scored the first goal of the game less than four minutes into the contest as the Lady Monarch women's lacrosse team never looked back in a 16-7 victory over Richmond. The Lady Monarchs improve their record to 8-3 while the Spiders fall to 6-3 on the season.

Old Dominion took a 2-0 lead on unassisted goals by Hensil and one of four by sophomore Suzanne Woczyna (Phoniexville, VA) less than five minutes into the game. Richmond's Carrie Aitken tallied the Spiders' first goal with 24:12 remaining, but that would be as close as they would get. The Lady Monarchs followed with three unanswered tallies and bumped their lead up to 5-2 with 16:14 left in the half. The Spiders used back-to-back goals by Polly Purcell and Alexis Brandolini within a minute's span, but the Lady Monarchs held Richmond scoreless the remainder of the half while registering four more goals before the end of the first stanza for a 9-3 halftime advantage.

The Lady Monarchs struck again in the early minutes of the second half as Wosczyna and senior Jennifer Heister (Fayetteville, NY) pushed the Old Dominion lead to 11-3 just four minutes into the final half. Aitken scored again for Richmond at the 23:40 mark, but the Lady Monarchs would keep the Spiders scoreless for the next 17 minutes while extending their lead to 15-4. Richmond managed just three more goals over the final 7:30 and pulled to within 15-7. Old Dominion's junior Deena Corwin (Baldwin, NY) scored her first career goal for the Lady Monarchs final score of the afternoon with 24 seconds remaining.

CAA Player of the Week, Woczyna, led all scorers with four goals and three assists for seven points, the fifth time this season she has tallied seven points. Heister , Hensil, and junior Marlaine Smith (Gaithersburg, MD) each added three goals apiece, while Smith and Hensil also recorded an assist. For Richmond, the Spiders were led by Aitken's three-goal effort.

In net, Old Dominion keeper sophomore Beth O'Leary (Manilus, NY) stopped four shots on net, while Spider netminder 16 recorded nine saves in the loss.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Saturday, when they host #3 Loyola (MD) at Foreman Field at 1:00 p.m. in the annual scholarship game. Entry into the game is $5.00 and will all proceeds to benefit the ODU Intercollegiate Fund for Women's Lacrosse Scholarships.
