NORFOLK, VA -- The Lady Monarchs top two scorers from last season picked up right where they left off as junior Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA) tallied five goals and five assists and senior Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) added four goals and two assists in #17 Old Dominion's season opening 16-11 victory over American in women's lacrosse at Foreman Field on Saturday afternoon.

Old Dominion improved to 1-0 while American fell to 0-1.

The Eagles struck first as sophomore attack Rebecca Copeland scored one of her three goals on the afternoon five minutes into the contest for an early 1-0 American led. The Lady Monarchs did not wait long though to tie the game as Hensil poured in her first goal just over a minute later to net the score at 1-1. Copeland put the Eagles ahead 2-1 with 22:07 on the clock on her second straight goal, however, the Lady Monarchs were there to tie the game back up. Hensil once again scored tying the game at 2-2 with 20:37 remaining in the half.

American then rattled off two answered tallies for a 4-2 lead before the Lady Monarchs took control of the game. After senior attacker Nadia Harmsen gave the Eagles the two-goal advantage with 12:15 left until the half, the Old Dominion defense clamped down on the American offense only allowing the Eagles one more goal the remainder of the half. The Lady Monarchs went on to score five unanswered goals for a 7-4 lead in the closing minutes of the first half. American's junior Nicole McCarthy put one in the back of the Lady Monarch net in the closing seconds as Old Dominion entered the half up 7-5.

Old Dominion continued its rapid scoring pace recording three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to go up 10-5. The Eagles would pull within three, 10-7, with just under 18 minutes remaining, but would get no closer. The Lady Monarchs retaliated by netting six of the next eight goals. The Lady Monarchs managed to outscore the Eagles, 9-6, in the final half of play.

Sophomore Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA) also added five goals in the Lady Monarch victory. Shotwell, who was Old Dominion's top substitute last season, made her first career start. Junior Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD) also added two goals in a winning effort for Old Dominion.

Hensil collected six groundballs, added six caused turnovers, and recorded five draw controls. Wosczyna controlled the draw on four occasions and also scooped up three groundballs.

The Eagles were led by the five-point efforts of McCarthy and Copeland. Both recorded three goals and two assists in the loss. McCarthy had four draw controls and four groundballs. Copeland and Barnes each recorded three groundballs and Michael controlled three more draws for the Eagles in the defeat.

In goal, Old Dominion's Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) made her first collegiate appearance stopping seven Eagle shots on net. American's freshman Kathleen Finnegan and junior Laura Randisi combined for 19 saves.

The #17 Lady Monarchs return to action this Wednesday against #3 Virginia at Foreman Field at 4:00 p.m.
