Anders Celebrates 400th Win in 2-0 Shutout

NORFOLK, VA -- Lady Monarch field hockey head coach Beth Anders became the first ever NCAA Division I field hockey coach to accumulate 400 victories with Old Dominion's 2-0 shutout over Colonial Athletic Association rival, #11 William and Mary. Anders brings her career total to 400-58-7 in 20 years at the helm of the Lady Monarch program.
"I'm not about numbers," said Anders following her historic victory, "but I'm glad I got the win with this group. They are really working hard and it's an honor to get the win with them."
The third ranked Lady Monarchs (10-3, 2-0 CAA) scored both goals in the first half of play in a very physical game. Junior Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA) put away the game-winner with 24:09 on the clock on Old Dominion's fourth penalty corner of the stanza. Rookie Melanie de Jager (Pretoria, South Africa) and senior Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, PA) were credited with the assists. Junior Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA) added an insurance goal at the 18:28 on a rebound from the left corner of the net following a Lady Monarch corner for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Lady Monarchs outshot the Tribe, 14-3, allowing just one William and Mary (10-3, 1-2 CAA) shot on net in the second half. Old Dominion also held the advantage in penalty corners, 17-2. The Tribe's Claire Miller recorded ten saves on the night in net, stopping eight of Old Dominion's nine shots in half number two. Lady Monarch netminder junior Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) picked up her sixth shutout of the season making two stops in goal.
"It's awesome to have a great coach like Beth," said Snow, who netted her fourth goal of the season with night's game winner. "She has tough us so much and we owe our success to her."
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday against the top ranked team in the STX/NFHCA poll, the #1 Maryland Terrapins. Game time begins at 1:00 p.m. in College Park, MD.
