Men's Tennis Heads To CAA Championship Match

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team is heading to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship match on Sunday for a chance at an automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Men's Tennis Team Tournament. The second-seeded Monarchs advanced from today's semifinals with a 4-1 victory over third-seeded William & Mary, defeating the Tribe for the third time this season. Old Dominion took home the doubles point with close wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Henrique Cancado and Eidy Igarashi at the No. 2 spot and Rodrigo Souza and Nate Grover at the No. 3 position each teammed for 9-7 victories over their Tribe opponent. The Monarchs' Harel Srugo, Alex Seleznev, and Souza then all collected singles wins to put ODU into the championship match. Srugo defeated William & Mary's top singles player, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. At No. 4 singles, Seleznev collected a 6-3, 6-2 win over Matt Rubenstein. Souza rounded out the Monarch victories with a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Alex Zuck. The Monarchs will take on top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the championship match at Huntington Park.
