Men's Tennis Advances To CAA Championship Final

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Second-seeded Old Dominion held-on to advance in Saturday's semifinals of the CAA Men's Tennis Championship at Huntington Park Tennis Center. The Monarchs won the deciding match in doubles, then had to fend off numerous comeback attempts by William & Mary for a 4-2 win. In the other semifinal match-up, No. 4 Georgia State earned the doubles point then streaked to a three-match win in the singles to complete its upset of top-seeded VCU, 4-0. Georgia State claimed the doubles point over top-seeded VCU when Andres Arango and Augusto Alvarado used an 8-5 decision at the three over the Rams' Sergi Arumi and Sebastien Derridder. At the one, GSU's Martin Stiegwardt and Anze Cevka put together an 8-4 win over Arnaud Lecloerec and Petr Olsak for VCU. Steigwardt came up big in his singles match at the number one, winning 6-3, 6-3 over the Rams' Emil Lindgren. Mattias Skold then topped Arumi at number three, 7-5, 6-3. Each of the remaining spots were up for grabs with the Rams staying close, but Arango, who lost his first set at number four, 6-0, came back to complete the upset. The Guayaquil, Ecuador, native finished off his match with Alex Israel, 6-2, and 6-4 in the third to win. Old Dominion and William & Mary needed all three matches to decide the doubles point. The Monarchs' Harel Srugo and Henrique Cancado notched the first doubles win with an 8-2 decision over Alex Cojanu and Keziel Juneau at the one spot. William & Mary's Kavi Sud and Alex Zuck evened the doubles matches with an 8-5 victory over Old Dominion's Rodrigo Souza and Dom Manilla at number three. At number two, the third and deciding doubles match, Old Dominion's Alex Seleznev and Eidy Igarashi came up with a a 9-7 win over the Tribe's Colin O'Brien and Dominic Pagon.
After the highly contested doubles point, Old Dominion's Srugo topped O'Brien, 6-3, 6-1 at number one. The Tribe answered with wins at both the number two and number four. Cojanu picked up the victory at number two for the Tribe over Cancado, 6-4, 6-2, while Marwan Ramadon came back to win the final two sets at four over ODU's Igarashi. Old Dominion then took care of the match using Seleznev's 6-4, 6-1 win over Juneau at number three, and Souza's tiebreaker win at number five over Zuck. The Monarchs and Panthers are now set to play in Sunday's Championship final which will get underway at 1 p.m.
