NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion tennis team fell to Cornell, 4-0, on Friday evening at the tennis courts at Center Court Racket Club in Newport News.

The loss drops the Monarchs, ranked 66th in the latest ITA Poll, to 6-2 overall.

The Monarchs did manage to capture one of three doubles matches against the Big Red. Junior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and sophomore Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil), the nation's 33rd ranked doubles team, earned an 8-5 win over Cornell's Dan Brous and Charn Bak at No. 2 doubles. However, Cornell posted victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots for the point.

In singles, the Big Red took home wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 6 singles for the win, while the other matches were suspended.

Cancado was leading Brett McKeon at No. 2 singles coming from a first set deficit, 3-6, 7-6, 2-1 before the match was halted. Also sophomore Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was tied with Tongk Yu, 5-7, 6-1, 1-1, at No. 5 singles when their match was suspended.

Two of the Big Red needed three sets to get past the Monarchs for their wins. Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) overcame a first set loss to tie the match up before falling to Josh Ruff at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Same scenario occured for #90 Eidy Igarashi at No. 3 singles. He fell, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to Nick Brunner.

Old Dominion returns to action on Sunday against #13 Wake Forest at noon. That match will take place at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach. The Demon Deacons boast three nationally ranked singles players in their line-up.
