NORFOLK, VA-Junior righthander Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA.-IC Norcom) pitched a complete game one hit shutout as Old Dominion defeated William and Mary, 2-0 Saturday evening. It was Smith's second straight complete game. He fanned ten on the day with two walks. Will Ryhmes' double with one out in the first was the only Tribe hit.

In the fourth inning, Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD. reached on an error then scored from third when Steven Harris (Virginia Beach, VA. -Kellam HS) was thrown out in a run down, trying to steal second. In the eighth, Brandon Carter (Sacramento, CA.) led off with a single and reached second on a Tribe error. He would later score on Keith Hahn's (Valley Stream, NY.) single to make it 2-0. Derek James (Terre Haute, IN.) and Brandon Carter had two hits each.
 

 

Losing pitcher Sean Sosonko allowed four hits, with one walk and three strikeouts. The Tribe ranks fourth nationally with a .344 batting average and sixth nationally in scoring with a 9.6 runs per game average.

Smith now has a 2.15 (2.08 in CAA games) earned run average with 82 strikeouts in 67 innings. The two teams will play the third and final game of the series Sunday at 2 p.m.

NOTE

This was the 18th one-hitter in ODU history. The last was May 21, 1995 by Maika Symmonds against Richmond in the CAA Tournament in Kinston, NC.
