ATHENS, Ohio-The Ohio softball team has announced its 2004 team award winners, head coach Roanna Brazier announced Thursday. Seniors Erin Chapman (Beavercreek), Kiersten Scrima (Olympia, Wash.) and Georgia Villard (Canton) took home four of the six awards handed out by the team.

Chapman was named Team and Offensive MVP for the second season in a row after she led Ohio with a 326 batting average, one triple, eight home runs, 37 runs batted in and a .553 slugging percentage. A Great Lakes All-Region first-team selection for the second season in a row, she set the school record for most home runs in a season with eight and also made her way onto the single-season RBI and walks lists as well.

On the other side of the ball, sophomore first baseman Robin Miller (Chagrin Falls) was recognized as the team’s defensive MVP. Miller finished the season with 389 putouts, the fourth-highest single-season total in school history, while posting a .986 fielding percentage, (six errors in 418 chances). Miller also helped turn seven double plays and accumulated 23 assists on the year.

Freshman Natalie Armstrong (Murrysville, Pa.) was named the Ohio’s Most Improved Player. In her first season with the Green and White, Armstrong - who led the Mid-American Conference with seven saves and posted a 7-6 record this season - led Ohio in most pitching categories with 129 innings pitched, a 2.12 ERA, 80 strikeouts and four combined shutouts. Her 42 appearances during the year tied her for second most on the school’s single season list for appearances made by a pitcher.

Scrima was honored as the recipient of the Amy DeShay Award. Named in honor of the former Bobcat softball player that died in a traffic accident in 1995, the award is given to the person who best represents the epitome of a team player. A second-team All-MAC selection during her senior season, Scrima posted career-highs in batting average (.303), hits (53), doubles (13), home runs (4), runs batted in (17), total bases (80). She played in all 51 games this season, earning the start in all but one of those contests.

Villard earned the Wendy Fox Award, named in honor of the former Ohio player that passed away due to illness in January 2002. It is presented to the individual who exhibits the most strength and drive to succeed. Villard started 45 games in her final season with the Bobcats, all in the catchers position, while recorded 21 hits, three doubles, one home run and a career-high 10 RBI. She played in the final four games of the season despite suffering a leg injury at Eastern Michigan on May 5 that required 20 stitches in her left thigh.

The 2004 Ohio softball team finished the season with a 20-31 mark overall and a 13-11 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Bobcats made their second appearance in three seasons at the MAC Softball Championship, earning the No. 5 seed in the tournament.
