Track and Field Teams Place Third at Ohio Tri-Meet

    AKRON, Ohio - The Ohio track and field teams each earned a third-place slot Saturday at the Ohio Tri-Meet. The Kent State Golden Flashes won the women's title with 151 points, while second place went to Akron (116). Ohio claimed third, missing second place by just one point (115). On the men's side, host Akron led in scoring with 152 points, followed by Kent State (139) and Ohio (99). The meet is the final scored competition for the Bobcats until the Mid-American Conference Championship.

    The Ohio women collected four first-place finishes on the afternoon, three of which were achieved with season-best marks. Senior Jen Martin (Athens) recorded a season-best time of 24.65 in the 200 meters en route to victory, while junior Mary Reynolds (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in her second-ever running of the event (11:59.7). Reynolds' time was a season- and career-best. Senior Sarah List (Milford) leapt to first place in the high jump with a height of 5' 4 ¼", while the 1,600-meter relay squad turned in a new season-standard of 3:47.07 to capture the win.

    Other top finishers for the Bobcats included Lindsay Nemastil (Cleveland Heights), who captured second in the 5,000 meters (4:48.83) and fourth in the 800 meters (2:26.59). Senior C'Rai Weeden (Cleveland) garnered second-place honors in the 400 meters (56.10), while Kerra Brown (Mount Vernon) and Jen Maas (Newton Falls) placed third (57.07) and fifth (59.42) in the event, respectively. Martin capped off her scoring with a fifth-place performance in the 100 meters (12.37), while Kelly Felter (Kent) crossed the line in second in the 5,000 meters (17:57.68). Foli James (Albany) had a breakthrough day in the 100-meter low hurdles, capturing second-place with a career-best time of 14.09, while Jericka Duncan (Aurora) earned fifth-place in the event (14.92). Duncan also collected second-place honors in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:01.93), while Mandy Ruza (Willowick) finished fourth (1:12.12).

    Heather Moore (Galena) had two career-best performances on the afternoon with fifth place in the triple jump (37' 3") and third place in the javelin (137' 5"). Joining Moore in the javelin scoring was Lacey Poff (Gahanna), who earned fifth place (79' 11"). Poff also captured second-place honors in the discus (140' 7"), while teammate Mary Williams (Cincinnati) took third (135' 3"). Williams rounded out her scoring with fourth place in the hammer throw (142' 5"), while James and Rebekah Diehl (Lancaster) were part of a three-way tie for third place in the long jump (18' 5 ¼"). James also took fifth in the high jump (5' 4 ¼"), while tri-captain Michelle Borsz (Parma) captured fourth (5' 4 ¼"). Rounding out the key performances for Ohio was Jill Meranda (Loveland) with a third-place showing in the pole vault (11' 5 ¾").

    On the men's side, freshman Jason Linton (Vincent) had the only Ohio win of the afternoon. Linton's victory came in the 1,500 meters (3:58.26), while he went on to earn fourth-place honors in the 800 meters (1:55.28). Both times were career-bests.

    Also contributing in multiple events for the Bobcats was junior Roger Redd (Pickerington). Redd captured third place in the 200 meters (21.71) and fourth-place in the 100 meters (10.81). Junior Chad Brinker (Martins Ferry) provided depth in the latter event with a fifth-place showing (11.01). In the 400 meters, John Smith (Cleveland) claimed third (50.12), while Mark Johnston (Valley View) took fifth (52.32). Justin Kempe (Canfield) collected second-place honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:19.5), while Drew Frum (Poland) finished second in the 5,000 meters (15:35.39).

    Jason Lanza (Greensburg, Pa.) crossed the line in third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a new career-best time of 54.45. Lanza also snared fourth-place honors in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.44). In the high jump, tri-captain Kyle Sheer (Bradford) leapt to second place (6'4 ¾"), while seniors Brent Horst (Athens) and Nate Noel (Athens) took fourth (6' 2 ¾") and fifth (6' ¾"), respectively. Thomas Stephens (Springfield) earned fourth-place honors in the long jump (21' 4"), while John Whitney (Clymer, N.Y.) leapt to second place in the triple jump (44' 10 ¾").

    Tri-captain Steve Godek (Mentor) led the effort in the throwing events with second place in the javelin (168'), third place in the shot put (50' 7 ¼") and fourth place in the discus (138' 11"). Freshman Zac Williams (Lancaster) earned fifth-place honors in the discus (137' 5"), while Eric Bildstein (North Olmsted) had a third-place showing in the javelin (145'). Bildstein also snared fifth in the hammer throw (143' 8"), while Nate Arbogast (Bellefontaine) captured fourth in the event (152' 4"). Rounding out the top Bobcat performances of the afternoon was Luke Baker (Killbuck) with fifth place in the pole vault (12' 11 ¾").

    The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, May 11, as they return to Goldsberry Track at Pruitt Field to host the Ohio Open. The meet is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
