No. 4 Michigan Defeats Wildcats, 153-132
Jan. 31, 2003
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Despite a pair of season-best, NCAA "B" cut times by Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Preparatory), fourth-ranked Michigan proved too much for the Northwestern men's swimming team to overcome Friday night. The Wolverines cut down the Wildcats 153-132 at Canham Natatorium. Michigan posted victories in nine of the 16 events and had times that would have been worthy of first-place finishes in three of the final four races had it not exhibitioned its racers. The victory improves the Wolverines' dual meet record to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten. NU falls to 4-7 overall and 0-5 in conference action. O'Connor improved on his provisional qualifying time in the 200 butterfly by winning in a time of 1:46.33. The time is currently tops in the Big Ten. He defeated Davis Tarwater, the second-ranked swimmer in the event, by nearly a second. O'Connor also earned his first "B" cut time in the 100 fly, finishing first in 48.47, a time that now ranks as the second-fastest amongst conference swimmers. Brian Davis (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah) improved his NU top time of the season in the 1000 freestyle by posting a first-place time of 9:21.69 to win by four seconds. He topped his previous best time by over five seconds. Northwestern also received first-place finishes from Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) in the 100 back (50.50), Mike Shue (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) in the 500 free (4:34.09) and Mark Hamming in the 200 individual medley (1:51.59).
The 400 freestyle relay team of Swanson, Ben Dexter (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli), Dan Williams (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) and Shelby Clark (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) added NU's final title in a time of 3:03.65.
In addition, the Wildcats' 400 medley relay team of Swanson, Louis Torres (Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West), O'Connor and Hamming, despite placing second, improved its season-best time by three seconds (3:19.77). The time ranks in the top 20 in the nation this season. Northwestern returns to the Norris Aquatics Center at 6 p.m. Friday for its final home dual of the season when it takes on Iowa. The second session begins at 10 a.m. Saturday. |
