Wildcats Fall in Two Matches at Princeton Invitational

Feb. 18, 2006

PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore driver Carla Martinez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) scored four goals in two matches today at the Princeton Invitational, but Villanova (0-3) was defeated in both of its contests in the Princeton Invitational on Saturday at DeNunzio Pool. The Wildcats fell to Maryland (4-1) by a 10-6 score in the morning, and lost to Harvard (2-0) 11-8 in the afternoon.

In the first match of the day, the Terrapins led Villanova 3-2 at the end of the first period, but then scored four times in the second period to open up a 7-4 lead at halftime. Both teams added a goal in the third period and the Wildcats were within 8-5 heading into the final frame, but Maryland tacked on two more goals before settling on the final 10-6 margin.

Martinez scored three of her goals for the day in the Maryland match, while senior driver Kim Pare (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored her second and third goals of the season. Junior driver Brynn Rooney (Downers Grove, Ill.) also had a goal for Villanova.

In their afternoon match, the Wildcats turned in their best offensive output thus far with eight goals against the Crimson. Villanova scored twice in the second period and trailed Harvard 4-3 at halftime, but the Crimson netted four goals of their own in the third period and pushed the lead to 8-5. Both teams scored three times in the final period to account for the final margin.

Martinez added another goal against Harvard, while Pare added two goals. Sophomore defender Christina Dopp (Stockton, Calif.) and sophomore utility Meredith Klipa (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also added two scores apiece for the Wildcats.

Villanova will face Wagner at 11:15 a.m. Sunday in their final match of the weekend.
