Wildcats edge West Virginia in Five Games

Sept. 30, 2006

Final Stats

Villanova, PA - As they have in each of their last three home matches, the Wildcats (8-9, 2-1) have set the tone for the match early in the first game. However, on Saturday against West Virginia (1-16, 0-3), the Mountaineers were able to turn the tide after the game two. They would come back to win games three and four to force a decisive fifth game. And in that game, the two teams would go back and forth, before some solid play by Villanova and a couple costly errors by WVU allowed the Wildcats to come out on top, 15-11.

Leading the way statistically for Villanova was Alona Cherkez with 24 kills with a hitting percentage of .404. Kacy Sellers added 15 kills and 5 blocks, while Adrian Semrau registered 13 kills.

Freshman Amy Gulyas led the 'Cats defensively with a career-high 28 digs, besting her previous high of 24 set against La Salle earlier this season. Dana Tartasky was the third Wildcat with double figure digs with 14 and also had three of Villanova's nine service aces on the day.

Villanova won games one and two rather easily (30-15, 30-17) and looked to be on their way to a three game sweep. But West Virginia responded by winning games three and four (30-25, 30-27) by holding off a late Wildcats' charge in both games.

In the fifth game was a very even game until the Wildcats were able to string together a run to close out the game and the match.

Nevin Field House will once again be the site for the Wildcats next match, this time they welcome the Pittsburgh Panthers for a 2 PM start on Sunday, October 1.
