Women's NCAA Championship: Muncan Runs Strong But is Edged at Finish

June 10, 2006

Villanova senior Marina Muncan (Pancevo, Serbia) concluded an impressive week at the NCAA Track and Field Championship by finishing second in the final of the women's 1,500 meter race in Sacramento on Saturday afternoon with a time of 4:15.27. She was edged out by Amy Lia, a sophomore at the University of Washington, who ran a 4:14.63.

Villanova sophomore Frances Koons (Allentown, Pa.) - who recorded a personal best in an outstanding effort in the preliminary heat on Thursday - finished in 4:19.76. That placed her tenth in the field today yet the experience gained here this week figures to serve her well over the rest of her career as a Wildcat.

Muncan turned in the top time in the heats on Thursday and was poised to contend from the outset of this afternoon's race. She did exactly that and wound up second in a tightly bunched pack at the finish line. Florida State's Natalie Hughes was third with a time of 4:15.72 while University of Michigan sophomore Nicole Edwards took fourth with a time of 4:16.06.

Coupled with the efforts Villanova teammate Monique Morgan (Kingston, Jamaica), who earned All-American honors in the 100 meter hurdles with her effort on Friday night (13.18) it was a most productive week for the Wildcats.
