Women Place 4th in 4x1500m
April 27, 2007 Philadelphia, Pa. - The second day of the 113th Penn Relay Carnival brought more than competition to Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania. Participants endured stormy weather, which delayed the start of today's events. However, despite conditions, the Villanova women carried over their momentum from yesterday to place fourth overall in the 4x1500m event with a time of 17:45.92. The Wildcat relay team, comprised of seniors Liz Gesel and Akilah Vargas, junior Frances Koons, and sophomore Ellen Dougherty, put forth a heroic effort combining for a fourth place finish following closely behind Michigan, Brigham Young, and Georgetown, respectively. Gesel ran the opening leg of the race putting Villanova in the ninth position with a split of 4:29.5. After the baton hand off, Vargas posted a 4:26.4 split to increase the Wildcats' position to sixth halfway through the race. With a split of 4:30.1, Dougherty was able to maintain the sixth spot in the third leg before handing the race over to anchor Koons for the finish. Similar to yesterday's performance, Koons was able to bump the Wildcats up to fourth with her split of 4:19.9, which was Villanova's best time. Later in the day, resident hurdler Monique Morgan posted a 13.88 in the 100m hurdles to place fifth in her respective heat. Her time places her eleventh overall in this event heading into tomorrow's finals scheduled to take place at 3:50 p.m. For a complete list of today's results, click here WOMEN'S 4x1500m RESULTS:
