Frances Koons Smashes Meet Record in 3000m at New Balance Collegiate Invitational

Feb. 4, 2007

Bronx, N.Y. - The Wildcats continued their winning ways with a host of outstanding performances in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

Leading the way once again, junior All-American Frances Koons set a new meet record in the 3000m wining in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 9:01.01. The previous meet record was 9:13. Koons' time knocked 17 seconds off her previous best of 9:18 set last year. It was the third straight meet that Koons has set a meet record. Her time moves her to third on the all-time Villanova list behind Olympians Vicki Huber and Sonia O'Sullivan.

In only her third meet as a collegian, freshman Theresa Rush established herself as one to watch in the future, setting a new meet record and personal best of 2:51.73 in winning the 1000m run.

Senior All-American Monique Morgan, ran a personal best of 8.23 in the prelims of the 60m hurdles to move up on the NCAA list. Morgan finished fifth in the final on Saturday.

"I was very pleased with how the team performed as a whole,' said head coach Gina Procaccio. "We had several seasonal best performances and Big East qualifiers. We are right where we want to be two weeks out from the Big East Championships."
