Wildcats See Success at Bucknell Invitational

Oct. 1, 2007

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Villanova women's tennis team competed in its first tournament of the 2007-08 season at the Bucknell Invitational this past weekend in Lewisburg, Pa. The Wildcats saw a majority of their success in doubles action, where they had two pairs advance to the quarterfinals before bowing out to their respective opponents.

Senior Ashley Reed and junior Jaclyn Williamson partnered to cruise into the quarterfinals in Flight `A' Doubles before dropping a tight 9-7 match to Bucknell's Lauren Lucido and Tania Varela. The duo easily handled their first two opponents as they defeated Loyola's Joy Johnson and Kerri Swan by a score of 8-1 and Duquesne's Rebecca Poole and Zena Williams 8-6.

The story was much of the same for teammates Natasha Stone and Katherine Monari. The freshman pair defeated Duquesne's Lanna Buehler and Kristen Swenson by an 8-6 margin, as well as secured an 8-5 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson's Clara Smith and Jessica DeCarlos. Stone and Monari's run in Flight `B' Doubles came to a halt as they faltered to Buffalo's Jenelle Jones-Mitchell and Diana Toia by a score of 8-2.

Although Villanova seemed to struggle a bit in singles action, the Wildcats did see success in Flight `A' Singles as a result of Williamson. The Unionville, Pa. native advanced to the quarterfinals before narrowly falling to Duquesne's Zena Williams, the eventual Flight `A' Champion.
