La Jolla, Calif. - The Villanova women's tennis team narrowly fell to No. 16 UC San Diego by a score of 5-4 in their 2007 season opening match at the North View Tennis Courts in La Jolla, Calif. The Wildcats drop to 0-1 on the season, as the Tritons climb to 5-3 overall.

Senior Candice Carlin was the big winner for Villanova as she defeated UC San Diego's Marsha Malinow with convincing scores of 6-3, 6-1 in the top singles match. The Wildcats also posted points in the fourth and sixth singles spots with wins by freshmen Carla Erskine and Colleen Walter, respectively.

Villanova fell short in the doubles matches by only winning the second doubles spot on the efforts of senior Leighann Reilly and sophomore Jaclyn Williamson. UC San Diego captured to other two spots to seal the doubles point and, eventually, the match.

The Wildcats continue their stint in California as they take on Vanguard today, March 6 at 1:00 p.m.
