Wildcat Softball Wraps-Up Spring Break Trip With 10-2 Record

March 10, 2002

VILLANOVA, PA.----- The Villanova softball team recently completed its Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla., where they competed in the Rebel Spring Games, with a 10-2 record. Sophomore Ricci Lugo (San Clemente, Calif.) started the season on a high note after belting six home runs in the first 12 games of the 2002 season.

Lugo wrote her way into the record books on Friday, March 8, versus Sacred Heart as she became only the second player ever in the program's history to hit for the cycle. She finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate with a single, double, triple, and home run, driving in four of the Wildcats six runs in their 6-0 victory over Sacred Heart.

Lugo finished the trip batting .455 (20-for-44) with six home runs, 21 RBI, 14 runs, three triples, and a slugging percentage of 1.023.

Freshman Shannon Williams (Allentown, Pa.) led all Wildcat pitchers collecting a 2-0 record with two saves in 22.1 innings of work. Williams made seven appearances only allowing three earned runs, all against Gardner-Webb in her first outing of her collegiate career. She finished the week with a 0.94 earned run average.

Collectively, Villanova won its first five games of the trip before stumbling against Fairfield University, dropping a 3-1 decision. The Wildcats ended their trip revenging their loss to Fairfield with a 5-0 shutout on Saturday, March 9. The Villanova pitching staff combined to throw five shutouts.
