Wildcats Split on First Day of MASCUA Tournament

NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Kristen Haynes (Fairfax, Calif.) pitched all seven innings and gave up just five hits, helping the Wildcats to a 3-1 victory over the Radford Highlanders in the first day of play at the Mid-Atlantic Softball College Umpires Association tournament. Villanova lost its first game of the day to San Jose State University, 5-3.

The Spartans (8-6), scored one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings, while adding two in the sixth for the win. Villanova was able to respond with runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. The Wildcats' offense came from senior Lisa Krueger, freshman Jackie Dempsey and sophomore Sheri Donley, who were each 2-for-4 at the plate. Shannon Williams pitched the complete game, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.
 

 

Villanova rallied back from its loss with a win over Radford (7-10). Haynes pitched all seven innings, striking out seven, while giving up just five hits. The Wildcats scored two runs in the first inning. Donley led off with a single, followed by another single from Dempsey. Sarah Wall loaded the bases with her single. Krissy Yauch then came to the plate and hit an-RBI single to score Donley. Lisa Curran followed Yauch's effort with an RBI of her own, singling to score Dempsey. Villanova's third run came in the sixth inning after Yauch hit yet another single and was brought in by a shot from Donley.

The Highlanders scored their lone run in the sixth inning.

Villanova, which improved to a 4-4 season record with its win over Radford, continues play on Saturday at Norfolk State University, facing Delaware at 9 a.m. and Norfolk State at 11:30 a.m.
