Villanova Softball Advances To Big East Championship Game
May 9, 2003 Salem, Va. - On Friday, May 9, the Villanova University softball team advanced to the Big East Championship game for just the second time in school history with a 3-0 win over Boston College in the semi-finals. With the win, Villanova's record improves to 34-14-1 on the season. The Wildcats scored all the runs they would need or the victory in the bottom of the second inning. The Wildcats loaded the bases on singles from Kari Koller and Sarah Wall and a walk by Jessie Olownia. Senior catcher Kriste Romano then singled up the middle to score Koller for the eventual game winning RBI. Villanova added another run when Jessie Olownia scored on a wild pitch. Villanova added an insurance run in the fourth when Olownia scored on a fielding error by the Eagle pitcher. Theresa Hornick kept Boston College off balance all game, only allowing one hit- a single to Jacqui Goodchild in the fourth. The win was Hornick's 19th of the season. The Wildcats will now take on the defending Big East champions Notre Dame tomorrow at 1:00PM. Due to the fact the Irish have not lost in the tournament, Villanova must defeat them twice to win the title. A win tomorrow will also be head coach Maria DiBernardi's 500th career win. |
