Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Princeton With 5-3 Win In Game Two
April 19, 2007
Princeton, N.J. - Still riding the momentum from their dramatic extra innings win in game one of the doubleheader, the Wildcats opened game two with a flurry of activity in the first three innings. In the first inning, the `Cats put two runs on the board on a base hit from Danielle Maricle. Cassie Koenig scored from second on the single, drawing a throw from the right fielder. The throw was wild and ended up in the Wildcats' dugout, allowing Meghan Morese to score to give Villanova an early 2-0 lead. Maggie Seidel led off the top of the second inning with her first career home run at Villanova (19-19-1). After another scoreless half inning from the Tigers, Villanova used the long ball once again to extend their lead. This time it was Cassie Koenig doing the honors with her fifth home run of the year, well over the left field fence for a 5-0 advantage. Kelsey Quist would bring the Tigers (18-25) to within two with her fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left center in the fourth inning to make the score 5-3 in favor of the Wildcats. But Villanova starting pitcher Laura Determan (11-9) would take control from there, not allowing the Tigers to mount any more threats the rest of the way to pick up her 11th win of the season. She surrendered three runs on seven hits to go along with seven strikeouts and two walks. The game was called after the sixth inning due to darkness.
It was the top five batters in the Villanova lineup that did a majority of the damage in game two. They combined to go 7-14 with a home run, three RBI and four runs scored. Sheri Donley would extend her hit streak to ten games with a single down the right field line in the fifth inning. During the streak, she has hit .500 (19-38) with 12 runs scored, four home runs and seven RBIs. Meghan Morese has also been swinging a hot bat of late, collecting a hit in eight of her last nine games. The Wildcats will stay on the road this weekend, traveling to the University of Connecticut on Saturday and then Providence College on Sunday. They will play doubleheaders both days starting at noon. |
