Softball Sweeps Double Header From St. John's
March 31, 2003 Villanova, Pa.- On Monday, March 31, in a make-up of yesterday's rainout, the Villanova University softball team swept a doubleheader from the St. John's Red Storm by the scores of 4-3 and 6-1. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 8-7 on the season and 2-1 in Big East play, while the Red Storm fall to 14-16 overall and 1-3 in the conference. In the first game, freshman Jessie Olownia made the most of her first collegiate at-bat, singling home Ricci Lugo in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Wildcats a 4-3 victory. St. John's got on the board first in the top of the first when Allina Sainz hit a three-run homer over the left field fence. Villanova would answer back in the bottom of the sixth, when Kari Koller singled in Lisa Krueger, who had reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, Sarah Wall blooped a single over the St. John's shortstop to score Kristin Leese and Allison Wisniewski and tie the game at three. Theresa Hornick came on to pitch two innings of scoreless relief to pick up her fourth win of the season, while Robin Flier, Lisa Krueger, Kriste Romano, and Koller all had two hits for the Wildcats. In the nightcap, the Red Storm again got on the board first on a solo homerun by Jillian Sandoval. The 'Cats got the run back in the bottom of the third when Sara Carlson led off with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Lugo singled to right field, advancing Carlson to third, and Carlson crossed the plate on a wild pitch by the Red Storm hurler. The Wildcat offense put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth inning, when it erupted for five runs. Sarah Wall reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a walk by Kriste Romano. Kruger then reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Wall to score. Flier singled to shortstop, advancing Krueger to second. Carlson then hit a ball up the middle, which was misplayed by the shortstop, allowing Romano and Krueger to score. Lugo then continued the rally with a triple over the centerfielder's head, scoring Flier and Carlson. Honick allowed two hits and struck out six in her six innings of work. Haynes came on in relief to reord two strikeouts. The Wildcats get back in action tomorrow when they travel to Monmouth for a 3:00 game with the Hawks. |
