VILLANOVA, PA. - Villanova head women's soccer coach Ann Clifton recently announced the captains for the 2002 season. The captains were chosen by a vote of both the players and coaches. The Wildcats will have three captains in 2002, including senior Julie Battista and Jennifer Carrigan, and sophomore Michelle Biehl. Villanova junior Candice MacDonald was named an assistant captain for the upcoming season.
These four outstanding players help make up the core of what will be another outstanding Villanova women's soccer team in 2002. Battista scored two goals and added seven assists for 11 points last season. A defensive stopper for the `Cats, Carrigan also dished out one assist in 2001. One of the Big East's top up-and-coming players, Biehl had a breakout season last year. She proved to be one of the conference's and the nation's top defenders, and also scored one goal and added five assists for seven points. MacDonald was tied for second (with Battista) on the squad in assists with seven and also scored three goals to post 13 points.
The Wildcats will begin the 2002 season at home on Saturday, Aug. 31, hosting George Mason at 1:00 p.m. The Wildcats will then travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to face Lehigh at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
