Wildcat Offense Erupts in 6-0 Win Over Mount St. Mary's

Oct. 29, 2002

Final Stats

VILLANOVA, PA. - On a cold, rainy afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex on Tuesday, Oct. 29, the 15th ranked Villanova women's soccer team posted its ninth shutout of the season, blanking Mount St. Mary's by the score of 6-0. With the victory, the Wildcats extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games and improved their season mark to 13-1-4. The Mountaineers fell to 4-12-1 overall on the season with the loss.

Villanova dominated the first half of play, out-shooting Mount St. Mary's by an 11-3 margin and putting seven shots on goal. The `Cats were unable to put the ball in the back of the net in the wet, sloppy field conditions, however, and the game went into the half scoreless.

At the 56:06 mark of the second half, Villanova broke open the scoring. Senior defender Jennifer Carrigan found freshman Brittany Hunsaker with a dump pass to the left of net and Hunsaker beat Mountaineer keeper Naomi Campano to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.

Villanova added to its lead just over eight minutes later as Hunsaker knocked a crossing pass from sophomore forward Regina Villari into the left corner of the net to increase the Wildcats' lead to 2-0.

The `Cats kept up their offensive dominance, scoring just 3:28 later on a blast from junior midfielder Elizabeth Dauble off an assist from Kristin Dunst.

As the second half progressed, Villanova continued to put the game more and more out of reach. Freshman Lindsey Finnegan scored her third goal in two games, netting her third goal of the season at the 73:39 mark to increase the margin to 4-0. Just 3:06 later, Villari finished off a pass from Dunst by putting the ball into left of the net to make it a 5-0 game.

The Wildcats capped off their scoring at the 80:45 mark when Kristin Dunst blasted a scorcher, which glanced off the head of a Mount St. Mary's defender and found the goal. Dunst's goal gave Villanova a 6-0 lead, and the `Cats cruised to victory from there.

In net for the Wildcats, junior goalkeeper Chrissy Dolan saved three shots to earn her eighth shutout of the season. The shutout was the ninth for Villanova in 18 games thus far in 2002, as the `Cats defense has allowed just nine goals in those contests.

Taking the loss in goal for the Mountaineers was Campano, who saved a game-high 13 shots.

On offense for the Wildcats, Hunsaker led the team with two goals, while Dunst recorded one goal and three assists, and Villari tallied one goal and one assist.

The offensive outburst by Villanova gave the `Cats 17 goals, 13 assists, and 47 points in the last two contests.

Head Coach Ann Clifton's Wildcats are unbeaten in their last 10 games, and have won eight of their last nine. Villanova is currently ranked 15th in the nation by Soccer America and 16th by Soccer Buzz.

On Sunday, Nov. 3, the Wildcats will host Boston College in the Big East Championship Quarterfinals at 1:00 p.m., at the Villanova Soccer Complex. Villanova is the No. 2 seed in the Big East Mid-Atlantic Division, while the Eagles are the No. 3 seed in the conference's Northeast Division.
