Goals Galore for Wildcats in Record-Setting 11-0 Win Over Howard

Oct. 27, 2002

Final Stats

VILLANOVA, PA. - It was a record-setting day for the 18th ranked Villanova women's soccer team on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Villanova Soccer Complex, as the Wildcats broke school records for goals in a half, assists in a game, and points in a game en route to an 11-0 victory over Howard University. The `Cats posted eight goals in the first half, and fell just two goals shy of tying the school record for goals in a game (13) set by the Wildcats on Sept. 17, 1986 versus La Salle. Villanova celebrated its "Senior Day" festivities with 11 goals and eight assists for 30 points in the contest.

Leading the offensive onslaught was junior Janessa Jeltema who recorded her first career hat trick for the Wildcats, who improve to 12-1-4 on the season with Sunday's victory. The Bison of Howard finish their season with a mark of 6-9-1 following the loss in their season finale.

It took Villanova only 6:22 to score the game's first goal, as sophomore forward Laura Johnson put a crossing pass right on the money to junior Candice MacDonald on the left side of the net. MacDonald beat Howard goalkeeper Lindsey Walton to the left from five yards out to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

From there, Villanova scored four more goals in a span of 6:54 to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Scoring for the `Cats during that period were Jeltema, defender Patricia Misciagna who notched her first career goal, Johnson who scored on a penalty kick, and sophomore forward Regina Villari.

Before the first half was through, Villanova would find the back of the net three more times to increase its advantage to 8-0 at intermission. Jeltema, freshman Lindsey Finnegan and Villari each scored to wind down the half for the Wildcats. Finnegan's goal was the first of her career.

In the second half, Villanova's dominance continued. Johnson, Jeltema and Finnegan each scored again as the Wildcats cruised to an 11-0 victory.

Villanova out-shot the Bison by a 34-5 margin in the contest. Combining for the shutout in net for the Wildcats were junior Chrissy Dolan (2 saves), sophomore Sara Stern (2 saves), and freshman Christy Schillig. The shutout was Villanova's eighth of the season. In the loss for Howard, Walton saved a game-high 14 shots.

Nine different Wildcats put points on the board for Villanova in the win. Jeltema had three goals, Johnson had two goals and two assists, Villari and Finnegan each tallied two goals and one assist, MacDonald and Misciagna each scored once, senior Kristin Dunst had two assists, and Michelle Biehl and Elizabeth Dauble each dished out one assist.

Villanova will get back into action on Tuesday, Oct. 29, hosting Mt. St. Mary's in the home regular season finale for the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m.
