Villanova Women's Soccer Falls to UConn on Senior Day
Oct. 17, 2004
VILLANOVA, PA. - The shots just would not fall the Wildcats' way on Senior Day at the Villanova Soccer Complex. Despite out-shooting the University of Connecticut by a 19-17 count on Sunday afternoon, the Villanova women's soccer team fell to the visiting Huskies by the score of 3-0. With the loss, the `Cats fall to 10-5-1 overall on the season and 4-4-1 in BIG EAST play. UConn improves to 11-5-0 overall on the year and 7-2-0 in conference action with the win.
Villanova was on the offensive early on in the contest, registering the first five shots of the game, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. The Huskies on the other hand were able to capitalize on their first opportunity. Jessica Gjertsen dribbled in to the top right of the box and let go a blast that found the top left corner of the net at the 16:09 mark to give UConn the early 1-0 lead.
Just over seven minutes later, the Huskies add to their advantage. Kristi Lefebvre sent a pass across the box towards the left post in the direction of Kathleen Frank. Frank finished the played for UConn, sending a shot past the outstretched arms of Wildcat keeper Jillian Loyden to increase the Husky lead to 2-0. Villanova continued to put shots on the UConn net in the second half, but again were unable to capitalize. In the 78th minute of play, a shot by Wildcat forward Laura Johnson went just high of the net and a shot by midfielder Kelly Breslin sailed just wide of the net, to keep the score at 2-0 in favor of Connecticut. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest, the Huskies put the game away as Gjertsen posted her second goal of the game and eighth of the season to send Connecticut home with a 3-0 victory. Earning the shutout win in goal for the Huskies was Megan Jessee, who stopped eight shots on the day. Loyden took the loss in net for the Wildcats, saving a team-high six shots. Villanova seniors Michelle Biehl, Laura Johnson, Patricia Misciagna, Erica Stewart, and Regina Villari were honored before the game in a pre-game "Senior Day" ceremony. Today's contest was the final home game of the 2004 season for the `Cats, and the final career home game for the five Villanova seniors. The Wildcats will get back into play on Friday, Oct. 22, traveling to Youngstown, Ohio, to take on the Youngstown State Penguins at 7:00 p.m. |
