Villanova Battles St. John's To A Scoreless Tie
Oct. 2, 2005
Queens, N.Y. - St. John's and Villanova played to a 0-0 tie Sunday at Belson Stadium in BIG EAST women's soccer action. St. John's got off to a good start by pressuring the Villanova defense and notching eight shots (two on goal) and a corner kick within the first 15 minutes of play. Beran had an excellent first half as well, posting four saves, including a stop in the 43rd minute. The close-range shot was taken by Villanova attacker Lindsey Finnegan but Beran dove to her left to preserve the 0-0 score. In the first half, St. John's held a 10-7 advantage in shots, while Jalalian and Holly Ryder had four and three shots, respectively. In the second half, St. John's nearly got a goal in the 57th minute when Kaitlin Schmidt played a great through ball down the left sideline that was controlled by Jalalian. Jalalian got a touch on it just outside the box, but Villanova goalkeeper Jillian Loyden made the save. Villanova (9-3-4, 2-0-2 BIG EAST) got perhaps its best scoring chance of the second half on a Nikki Mabery shot that hit the right post in the 52nd minute. Despite combining for 29 shots through 90 minutes of play, neither team was able to capitalize and the game went into overtime. For the Red Storm (5-6-2, ,1-3-1 BIG EAST), it was its fourth extra-session game of the season and third at Belson Stadium this year. In the 96th minute, Jalalian threatened to end the game when she gathered a pass from Kati Schantz and fired a shot just right. In the second overtime period, Red Storm goalkeeper Rebecca Capinera preserved the scoreless tie with a diving save following a Villanova corner kick in the 106th minute. Kelly Breslin headed the ball on goal, but Capinera dove to her right to make the stop. Capinera finished with five saves on the day, while Beran recorded four for the combined shutout.
Defenders Jacklyn James, Andrea Coukoulis, Julianna Cohen and Susan Byrne all had solid outings for the Storm, while Brittany Cavarra, Erin Henderson and Holly Ryder made plays in the midfield. Forward Natasha Lee got off one shot but made several good runs for St. John's, which played very aggressive soccer for 110 minutes. Five players were cautioned with yellow cards in the match (four for St. John's, one for Villanova). |
