Villanova Women's Soccer Rolls Past George Mason in Season Opener

Aug. 31, 2002

Final Stats

VILLANOVA, PA. - In the 2002 season opener for the Villanova University women's soccer team on Saturday, August 31 at the Villanova Soccer Complex, the Wildcats got two goals from freshman Kelly Breslin in a 3-1 victory over George Mason. Villanova improves to 1-0-0 overall on the season with the win, while the Patriots fall to 0-1-0.

The Wildcats broke open the scoring 29:42 into the game as junior Elizabeth Dauble blasted a shot from 20 yards out past George Mason goalkeeper Naomi Hines to give Villanova a 1-0 advantage.

Just under 10 minutes later, the `Cats added to their lead. Senior Julie Battista lofted a corner to the center of the field just in front of the goal. Sophomore Laura Johnson gained control of the ball and found Breslin on the left side of the crease. Breslin snuck the ball past Hines to the right, giving Villanova a 2-0 lead.

With less then two minutes to go before the half, the `Cats took control padding their lead to 3-0 as Breslin found the net once again off of a Kristin Dunst pass.

Villanova dominated the game in the first half of play, out-shooting the Patriots 10-4. In net for the `Cats, junior Chrissy Dolan saved two shots in the first half.

The Wildcat defense kept George Mason out of the net until the 85:09 mark of the second half, when Caroline Kent got a good bounce off of a deflected shot by Sarah Wilkinson and beat Dolan to trim the lead to 3-1.

Villanova shut down any chance of further George Mason rally, as the `Cats went on to the 3-1 win.

Dolan saved six shots in goal for Villanova to earn her first win of the season. Hines took the loss for the Patriots despite five stops.

The Wildcats will get back into action on Wednesday, Sept. 4, traveling to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Lehigh at 4:00 p.m.
