Late Goal Lifts Saint Joseph's Past Wildcats 10-9

April 23, 2005

Final Stats

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's Hawks (5-7 overall, 1-4 Atlantic Ten) scored the game's final five goals, including the game-winner with 13.9 seconds left in the second half, to post a 10-9 victory over the Villanova Wildcats (2-12 overall, 2-4 Patriot League) on an overcast afternoon at Villanova Stadium. Christina Colangelo's goal off a feed from Suzanne Finley snapped a 9-9 tie.

Villanova opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the contest when Alex Garvey took a pass from Cindy Koza and deposited it behind Hawk goalie Courtney Huff. A Becky Gardner goal off an assist from Kathleen Kelly gave the `Cats an early two goal cushion. A pair of Kerry O'Connell goals tied the game at two.

After Jenny Egan staked the Hawks to a 4-3 lead with 19:31 to go, Gardner scored three times in just over five minutes to push the `Cats back in front. Villanova took an 8-5 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats extended their lead to four when senior Amy Rocap - who was honored in Senior Day ceremonies prior to the game along with classmates Bess Hanley and Kristen Cornicello - beat Huff. But Saint Joseph's chipped away at the lead. When O'Connell scored her third goal of the second half with 4:05 left the game was tied at nine.

The ensuing draw was controlled by Villanova and the `Cats held the ball until under 35 seconds remained on the clock. But the Hawks forced a turnover and began a charge down the field. Finley found Colangelo cutting into the middle and her shot eluded Villanova goalie Jess Brozena.

Huff made 10 saves in net for the Hawks while Brozena stopped ten for Villanova.
