'Cats Comeback Falls Short in 10-8 Loss to Lehigh

VILLANOVA, Pa. - After falling behind by six goals in the first half Villanova staged a furious second half rally to pull within one before ultimately falling to Lehigh 10-8 in a non-conference women's lacrosse game played on a chilly night at Villanova Stadium.

Lehigh took control of the game in the first half. Christy Smith opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 25:10 of the period before Taylor Lucy responded with a goal at 24:02 to knot matters at one. But the Mountain Hawks scored five unanswered goals over the final 24 minutes of the stanza, including two from Smith and two more from Tess McGrath to build a 6-1 lead at intermission.

Villanova began its charge early in the second half when senior Christina Bahrs scored off a free position shot at 28:47. Smith and Sara MacIntyre, however, scored goals for Lehigh to stretch the Mountain Hawks' advantage to 8-2 with 25:14 left in regulation.

Stevie McFadden and Meg Wallace scored unassisted goals for the `Cats before Amanda Carlson converted a feed from Taryn McKenna to pull Villanova within three at 8-5. Inneke Carmola extended the Lehigh lead to 9-5 with her goal at 17:50 but the Wildcats did not wilt. Bahrs scored once more while Shannon Sullivan added two goals of her own to narrow the deficit to 9-8 with 4:12 left.

Lehigh, though, controlled the subsequent draw and burned nearly two minutes of clock before Carmola scored again at 2:18 to make the final 10-8.
 

 

Kelsy Ferris made 15 saves in net for Lehigh (6-6 overall, 2-1 Patriot League) while senior Jessica Brozena stopped seven shots for the Wildcats (4-6 overall).

Villanova returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Howard at 12:30 p.m.
