Women's Lacrosse Defeats Lehigh For Fourth Straight Victory

March 27, 2002

Bethlehem, Pa. --- The Villanova Wildcat women's lacrosse team continued their dominant play on Wednesday, March 27, defeating Lehigh 10-5 for their fourth straight victory of the season at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Junior Meghan Carolan (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) led the Wildcats in the win with four goals on the afternoon.

Lehigh opened up the scoring when Ella Studdiford netted the game's first goal at the 27:55 mark. The Wildcats answered when freshman Katie Komlo (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal) recorded her second goal of the season at the 25:00 mark. Less than two minutes later, Lindsey Syphard (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) found the net off of an assist by Carolan to take a 2-1 advantage. The Wildcats and Mountain Hawks would go back and forth from that point on and would go to intermission even at 4-4.

In the second half of action, the Wildcats continued their superb second half play rattling off the first three goals of the half, including the first two by Carolan. Senior Sarah DePeters (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) added the third goal of the half at the 22:39 mark and the 'Cats would go on to score three more goals en route to the 10-5 victory.

Getting the win in goal for the Wildcats was sophomore Brandy Greneir (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) who recorded a team-high 10 saves. Taking the loss for Lehigh was Vanessa Abbott, who saved a game-high 14 shots on the afternoon.

On offense for Villanova, Carolan paced the 'Cats with four goals and one assist, while Komlo tallied two first-half goals. Rounding out the scoring were DePeters, Syphard, senior Cecily Pierce (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and freshmen Stephanie Simpson (W. Friendship, Md./Glenelg) who each tallied one goal apiece.

With the win, Villanova improves their record to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League while Lehigh drops to 2-7 on the year and 0-2 in conference action.

The Wildcats will return to Villanova Stadium on Saturday, March 30 when they host the Colgate Red Raiders in a Patriot League game at 1:00 p.m.
