Carolan's Game Winning Goal Beats St. Joseph's 7-6

March 24, 2002

Philadelphia, Pa. --- On Sunday, March 24, the Villanova women's lacrosse team defeated St. Joseph's, 7-6, in double-overtime at Finnesey Field on the campus of St. Joseph's University. Meghan Carolan (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) scored the game-winning goal with 1:01 remaining in the double overtime period to give the Wildcats their third straight victory. With the win, the 'Cats improve to 4-2 overall as the Hawks drop to 1-2 on the season.

The Wildcats trailed 4-0 at intermission and once again stormed a fierce comeback to open up the second half. Carolan got Villanova on the scoreboard at the 27:51 mark and freshman Lindsey Syphard (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) followed that up less than two minutes later with a score of her own.

With the Wildcats trailing 5-4, Syphard then found a cutting Steph Haas (North Wales, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy) who found the back of the net to beat Hawk goalie Lauren Bradley with 12:57 remaining. Haas' goal would eventually force the overtime period as neither team could score down the stretch in regulation.

After a scoreless first overtime session, junior Caitlin Cocks (Northport, N.Y./Northport) came into the game to put the 'Cats up for the first time on the day scoring at the 2:24 mark in the double overtime period. St. Joseph's Kristin Teklinsky wasted little time as she evened the score with her fourth goal of the game twenty seconds later. The 'Cats, however, would control the draw, setting the stage for Carolan's game-winning goal.

Carolan and senior Sarah DePeters (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) each led Villanova with two goals on the afternoon. Cocks, Haas and Syphard each tallied one goal apiece in the victory.

In the net for Villanova, sophomore Brandy Greneir (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) was sensational for the Wildcats stopping 11 shots on the afternoon.

The Wildcats will look for their fourth straight victory when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. on Tuesday, March 24 to square off against Lehigh in a Patriot League battle. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
