Wildcat Lacrosse Downs La Salle 12-7

March 20, 2002

Villanova, Pa. --- On Wednesday, March 20, freshmen Katie Ardington and Amy Rocap each scored three goals for Villanova as the Wildcats defeated the La Salle Explorers, 12-7, in a non-conference match-up played at Villanova Stadium. With the victory, the Wildcats even their record at 2-2 on the season while the Explorers drop to an overall 2-2.

Villanova got off to a strong start early as junior Meghan Carolan found the back of the net at the 28:18 mark in the first half. Rocap then recorded her first goal of the game at the 25:38 mark to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. After the two teams exchanged goals for the remainder of the half, senior Cecily Pierce broke free and scored with just four seconds remaining on the clock to give Villanova a 6-4 advantage at intermission.

Opening up the second half, Rocap tallied her second goal just fifty seconds into play and senior Sarah DePeters followed up with a goal of her own at the 27:37 mark to give the 'Cats an 8-4 advantage. The Explorers answered right back with three straight goals including two from senior Jami Wilus but the Wildcats came up with four goals down the stretch to secure the 12-7 victory.

The Wildcat freshmen were the story on the night as Rocap, Ardington and Steph Haas combined for seven of the 12 goals scored in the victory. Carolan added two goals and two assists and DePeters also recorded two goals and an assist for Villanova. In the net, sophomore Brandy Greneir was solid for the 'Cats stopping 10 shots on the night.

The Wildcats will return to action this Saturday afternoon, March 23, when they host the Holy Cross Crusaders in Villanova's 2002 Patriot League opener. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
