Rocap's Late Goal Lifts Women's Lacrosse to Season Opening Win at Fairfield

March 3, 2004

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - With six seconds left in a tied-game, Villanova's Amy Rocap scored her sixth goal of the day, handing the Fairfield University women's lacrosse team a heartbreaking loss to the Wildcats, 11-10 on Wednesday afternoon on Alumni Field.

Sophomore Beth Loffredo (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored three of her team-high four goals over the final twenty-one minutes of the game, answering each Wildcat goal with one of her own, including the goal that drew the game to a tie at 10 apiece with 3:24 left in the contest.

Rocap opened the scoring 57 seconds into the game to give the Wildcats the early lead, but the Stags answered with back-to-back goals by senior Jessica Conahan (Milton, Mass.) and Loffredo. Fairfield took a 4-2 advantage at the 9:36 mark after goals by Conahan and freshman Caitlin Keane (Mahopac, N.Y.).

Villanova tied the score at four apiece but senior Colleen Sindall (Silver Spring, Md.) tallied two unanswered goals to run the Stag lead to 6-4 before Wildcat Kristen Morea scored at 27:02 to cut the lead to 6-5 at the intermission.

The second-half began with Rocap scoring two goals within the first five minutes to give Villanova their first lead of the game before freshman Ashley Chappell (Potomac, Md.) tied the game at seven each off a pass from classmate Sara Masterson (Sea Girt, N.J) with 23:08 left to play.

The game was a see-saw battle which saw eight ties and three lead changes with neither team taking more than a two goal advantage over the other.
