Wildcats Upset by Providence in Final Conference Game

Oct. 24, 2004

Final Stats

HARTFORD, Conn.-Amy Phillips and Melissa McGow scored two goals each as the Providence Friars claimed a 5-0 upset over the Villanova Wildcats Sunday afternoon at Trinity College. With the loss, Villanova falls to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the BIG EAST, while Providence improves to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Both teams started off the same: unable to get their shots into the goal. They battled back and forth until Providence caught its first break at 33:01 when McGow scored an unassisted goal, a reverse shot set up from the left side. Going into the half, the Wildcats had out shot Providence 12-6 and ended the game with 24 shots to Providence's 14.

Megan Foster registered seven shots on goal, while Lauren Campanelli and Sarah Francis each added three of their own. It was only the second time this season that the Wildcats failed to score a goal.

The Friars maintained only a one-goal lead until 40:35 when Phillips scored her first goal of the afternoon. She then followed with her second at 44:59 to put Providence up 3-0. Sophomore goalie Alex Whalen then replaced Erin Scott but the switch did nothing to deter Providence from claiming their first conference victory of the season.

McGow then notched her second unassisted goal at 57:25, and Abby McGuire scored the final goal at 59:24.

Villanova's conference tournament hopes now depend on the result of the final BIG EAST matchup of the season when Providence hosts Connecticut on Saturday, October 30. The Wildcats will return to the BIG EAST Tournament for the fourth consecutive year if Connecticut defeats the Friars.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, October 26 when they host La Salle at 4:00 PM.
