Wildcats Tripped Up By St. Joseph's in Overtime

Oct. 20, 2004

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--The Villanova Wildcats had a one goal lead with 5:16 remaining in regulation, but the St. Joseph's Hawks dealt `Nova a 4-3 overtime loss Wednesday afternoon at Finnesey Field.

The Wildcats (9-6) were quick to score first as sophomore forward Lauren Campanelli shot off a goal just 2:33 into the contest, with help from fellow sophomore forward Megan Foster. The Hawks (8-6), whose offense was initially lagging, were unable to respond and trailed by two at 30:11 after Rory Rogers fired a shot into the goal, capitalizing off a corner pass from Gina DeMaestri. The score remained 2-0 at the end of the first half.

In the second half, St. Joseph's came out ready to score, and did so at 38:17 when Lauren Loft collected a pass from Nicole Antonini and scored off a breakaway. `Nova quickly answered back less than three minutes later when freshman Catherine Somits tipped the ball into the goal off a shot from Foster.

The Hawks minimized the 3-1 gap at 48:26 when Katelyn O'Brien scored off an assist from Angela Hanna. After O'Brien's goal, the momentum on the field switched to the Hawks' side, and they were able to exploit their newfound energy. Then, at 64:44, St. Joseph's tied the game, 3-3, from a Maureen Casserly goal.

The first overtime period was scarcely a minute old when, at 71:24, Antonini scored the game-winner with assistance from O'Brien. It was `Nova's first overtime game this season.

The Wildcats next travel to Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. to take on BIG EAST rival Providence on Sunday, October 23. Game time is 1:00 PM.
