Helwig, Wildcats Blank Owls

Oct. 4, 2001

Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. ----- Junior goalkeeper Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) made five saves, earning her third shutout of the season and three different players scored as the Wildcats shot down the Temple Owls in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday, Oct. 4. The Wildcats improve to 7-4 on the year, as Temple falls to 5-6.

The Wildcats scored early and often in first half action. Senior Krissy Malchitsky (Perkiomenville, Pa.) scored her team-leading fifth goal just 1:22 into the contest to give Villanova a 1-0 lead.

Senior Stephanie Vrettos (West Long Branch, N.J) and sophomore Colleen Helms (Broomall, Pa.) each added one goal apiece to give Villanova a 3-0 lead at intermission.

Villanova's defense held the Owls in check for the entire 70 minutes of play allowing only five shots on goal, including only one in the first half. Helwig turned away all five shots to lower her goals against average to 1.11 on the year.

The victory marks the first time Villanova has beaten Temple since 1991. The Owls lead the all-time series 9-2.

The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, Oct. 7, when they host the Providence Friars in a Big East field hockey showdown. Game time is set for Noon at Villanova Stadium.
