Holy Cross Outlasts Wildcats

Villanova, Pa. --- On Sunday, Sept. 30, the Holy Cross Crusaders outlasted the Villanova Wildcats and emerged victorious in penalty strokes in non-conference field hockey action. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation, followed by two scoreless overtime periods before the Crusaders outscored the Wildcats 6-4 in strokes. The loss drops Villanova to 5-4 overall with all four losses coming in overtime. Holy Cross improves to 8-1 on the season.

Holy Cross jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 1:20 into the contest when Liz Tutella beat Villanova goalkeeper Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) for sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Kristina Dodier was credited with the assist.

Villanova tied the score at the 21:55 mark of the first half on a goal by sophomore Christina Lugones (Oceanport, N.J.). Lugones received a pass from senior, co-captain Stephanie Vrettos (West Long Branch, N.J.) and fired a shot into the cage from point blank range.

The two teams played the remainder of the contest knotted at 1-1. Helwig finished the day with nine saves, including five in the second overtime forcing the result to be decided by penalty strokes.

Villanova returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Philadelphia to play the Pennsylvania Quakers at Franklin Field. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
