Wildcat Tennis Opens Season at Bloomsburg Invitational

Bloomsburg, Pa.--The men's tennis team opened up the 2001-02 campaign traveling to Bloomsburg, Pa. to take part in the Bloomsburg Invitational tournament this past weekend. The Wildcats took court against Quinnipiac University, Binghamton University and host Bloomsburg University.

Round one singles action saw five Wildcats earning victories. Juniors Ryan Devine and Andy O'Neil were victorious for Villanova in their opening round matches defeating players from Quinnipiac in straight sets. Devine defeated Randal Shu, 6-1, 6-3 and O'Neil took straight sets from Evan Gutlog by the scores of 7-5, 6-2.

The Wildcat line-up could do no wrong to open up the second round sweeping Quinnipiac in each of their seven matches. Freshman Sean Gallagher looked impressive in his first collegiate match defeating Tony Consalvo 6-0, 6-0. Devine continued his steady play registering another victory, this time over Quinnipiac's Justin Lucht, 6-0, 6-2. Other players posting wins included Brad Adams, A.J. Rodhe, Andy Herron, John Topper, Justin Goulet and Lucas Kastner.

Third round action saw Gallagher, Toppel and freshman Ricardo Baracdi all take home victories against Bloomsburg University players. Baracdi overcame Brenden Miller 6-4, 7-5, Gallagher defeated Kevin Wenck 6-3, 6-2 and Toppel outlasted 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles played, the Wildcats took one of three matches from Bloomsburg, defeated Binghamton in two of four matches and swept Quinnipiac, 4-0.

The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 12 beginning at 3:00 P.M. when they play host to St. John's.
