Late Goal Lifts Georgetown to 1-0 Victory

Sept. 15, 2006

Final Stats

VILLANOVA, Pa. - In its last two visits to the Villanova Soccer Complex, Georgetown has ended Villanova's season. This afternoon the Hoyas (3-4-0 overall, 2-1-0 Big East) added to their recent history of success here, getting a goal from senior Ricky Schramm at the 87:06 mark to gain a 1-0 win over the Wildcats (3-4-1 overall, 0-3-0 Big East) here.

The field was soaked from morning rains and there was some rain during the contest. Footing was slick but both teams made the adjustment. Georgetown got its best chance of the first half when Richard Frank's free kick hit the post of the Wildcat net while a Dan DeMasters (Litiz, Pa.) blast in the 36th minute sailed just over the crossbar was Villanova's finest opportunity of the period.

The game was scoreless at intermission.

Villanova generated chances in the early stages of the second half. A Mike DelGuercio (Chatham, N.J.) shot from near the top of the box was deflected off a Hoya and nearly sneaked in under the cross bar. But Georgetown goalie Joe Devine got just enough of the ball to send it over the bar. Later in the period, DeMasters lofted a shot towards the net that Devine, who made seven saves, managed to corral.

The Wildcats outshot the Hoyas 17-5 in the second half but Georgetown was the only team to score. Larrabee sent a ball over the Wildcats defense and Schramm collected it with only Villanova goalkeeper Jason Friel in his path. Schramm dribbled to the left of the net, deked Friel and sent a shot into the left side of the net at 87:06 to give Georgetown the margin of victory.

Villanova had one final chance in the 89th minute but a Miles Harrison (Louisville, Ky.) header sailed over the net. This marked Georgetown's third straight win here. The Hoyas and Wildcats tied in the 2004 and 2005 Big East Tournament on campus with Georgetown advancing on corner kicks on each occasion.

Next up for the `Cats is a Sunday afternoon match with Seton Hall (1:00 p.m.)
