Five Wildcats Garner All-CAA Honors
May 4, 2007 Richmond, Va. - Five of Villanova's players have been recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association for their outstanding efforts and performances for the 2007 lacrosse season. The Wildcats placed at least one player on each of the all- conference teams, with a high of three named to the All-CAA Second Team. Senior Eric Heidenberger was rewarded with a spot on the All-CAA First Team, while junior Chris MacDonald and seniors Chris Colliniates and Paul Genovese were voted to the second team. Freshman Bryan McCartney rounded out the awards for Villanova by claiming his position on the conference All-Rookie Team. Heidenberger, one of this year's captains, finished as Villanova's leading scorer with 25 goals and six assists. The senior midfielder saw action in every single game this year registering a total of 31 points and collecting 22 ground balls. Heidenberger is still currently a top 10 finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes seniors who excel both on and off the field throughout the entirety of their college careers. MacDonald, who was named to the preseason All-CAA Team earlier this year, earned a spot on the all-conference second team for his second consecutive year. Consistent with last year's performance, the junior midfielder once again reigns as the team leader in assists with 18. He was also able to notch 19 goals for a total of 37 points. This feat marks him as the Wildcat leader in total points for the 2007 season. Face-off specialist, Colliniates, led this year's team in total ground balls with 127, which placed him on the All-CAA Second Team. In Villanova's win over Manhattan College, the senior collected a team-high of 10 ground balls to break Villanova's previous career ground ball record. Colliniates concluded his senior campaign with a career grand total of 342 ground balls. He also won 193 of 311 face-offs, while adding three goals and two assists.
Senior defender, Genovese, rounded out the All-CAA Second Team for Villanova. As one of this year's captains, Genovese scooped up 22 ground balls while causing his opponents to turn the ball over seven times. He has started in every single game of his career and was able to notch a goal and assist from his defensive position in his senior campaign. Freshman McCartney, who has clocked minutes in all 14 games of his rookie season, earned the final honor for the Wildcats. The Doylestown, Pa. native, was the lone freshman voted to represent Villanova on the CAA All-Rookie Team. In his impressive rookie campaign, McCartney collected 23 ground balls, which ranked him third on the team for this season. Villanova finished the 2007 season with an overall record of 7-7, while going 2-4 in conference play. The Wildcats final 15-14 loss to CAA opponent Sacred Heart shut them out of making the post season. For a complete list of the 2007 All-CAA Teams, click here |
