Jones Named Columbia's Head Men's Basketball Coach

April 19, 2003

Columbia University announced Friday evening that it had appointed Villanova assistant coach Joseph Jones as its 20th head men's basketball coach.

"Joseph will bring a new level of intensity and excitement to Columbia Lions men's basketball," said John Reeves, Columbia University Director of Physical Education & Intercollegiate Athletics in making the announcement. "His dynamic personality and attention to detail will captivate Columbia players, fans and alumni."

Jones spent the past six seasons as an assistant coach at Villanova. During his tenure the Wildcats appeared in five postseason tournaments and posted an overall record of 105-83. More importantly, Jones played a significant role in recruiting many of the student-athletes who entered the Villanova program.

In 1994, Jones was hired by then Hofstra head coach Jay Wright and spent three years working with Wright to establish a foundation for the Pride.

"Joseph's skill as a recruiter is his biggest asset," stated Reeves. "He has demonstrated ability to recruit and knows the New York area. He has been a key cog in the success at both Villanova and Hofstra."

Jones got his start coaching on the prep level, serving as head coach at Long Island's Comsewogue High School from 1991-94. The Long Island native was a four year letterwinner at the State University College of New York at Oswego. He graduated in 1987 with a degree in communications and earned his master's degree in counseling in 1989.

Jones, 37, and his wife Kristin, are the parents of a daughter Sydney (1).

"This is an exceptional combination!," said Wright. "Columbia University is one of the nation's most prestigious institutions. It is located in the hotbed of basketball. Joseph Jones is returning home to the New York area with a great passion for Columbia, the Ivy League, New York City and his profession. Joseph possesses integrity, communication skills and an irrepressible work ethic that make him a unique role model and leader of young men.

"The Villanova family will miss Joseph Jones dearly. We all know that Joseph and Columbia Basketball are destined for greatness."
