Texas-Pan American Pulls Away from Highlanders

NEWARK, NJ - Tamara Vaughn scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first half, as visiting Texas-Pan American toughed out a 70-57 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon in women's basketball at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

In addition to Vaughn, Texas-Pan American got 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds from MaHogany Daniel and Teshay Winfrey came off the bench for 10 points in 20 minutes. Daniel led the game in assists with six.

NJIT freshman Katie Piekielski led the Highlanders with 15 points,nine coming on three made three-point baskets and Aine O'Dwyer added eight points, scoring six of them all after the intermission. Sophomore Ali Baumlin led the game in rebounding, with 12 boards and added six points. Kelly Crowe and Jill Dickinson netted seven points apiece.

The Highlanders started out the game on a 18-5 run led by Piekielski who had five points. The Broncs fought back decreasing the lead to three on a jump shot by MaHogany at 7:39, 18-15.

Texas-Pan American took their first lead of the game with less then 5:30 left in the half on a three-point shot by MaHogany giving the Broncs a 23-19 lead.

Trailing 34-27, the Highlanders scored the first basketball of the second half on a three-pointer by Piekielski bringing NJIT within four. The Broncs went on a 6-0 run over the next two minutes led by MaHogany who scored four points from the free throw line.

The Highlanders rallied at the 5:00 mark, when Aine O'Dwyer hit back-to-back lay-ups bringing NJIT within five points, 55-60. Over the next three minutes the Broncs went on a 7-0 run closing out the game on free throws by Vaughn.

The Highlanders return to action when they travel to North Dakota on Thursday, February 8. Tip off is scheduled for 7pm.
