Lincoln, Neb. - The University of Nebraska showed why it is the number one team in the land, posting a 3-0 win over the University of Northern Iowa in the second round of the 2006 NCAA volleyball tournament, in a match held at NU Coliseum. Game scores were 30-16, 30-16 and 30-14 in favor of the Huskers.

Three Husker players were in double figures in kills, led by Jordan Larson with 16. Shannon Aschoff (Ankeny, Iowa) led UNI with 12 kills and hit .367 (12-1-30). Nebraska hit .423 (57-13-104) as a team, the highest UNI had allowed all season. The previous best hitting percentage by a Panthers opponent was .328 by Mississippi State Sept. 1. UNI hit just .092 (28-19-98) today.

Nebraska jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead in the first game. After a timeout, Aschoff keyed a 5-2 run, with two kills and a solo block, which pulled the Panthers within 11-8. However, the Huskers answered with a 7-0 run to take an 18-8 lead and put the game out of reach. Nebraska hit .409 (23-5-44) in the first game, while UNI hit just .139 (9-4-36). Aschoff and Daniell Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) combined for seven of the Panthers nine kills.

The Huskers got out to a 4-1 lead in game two, but UNI battled back to pull within 7-6. A 4-0 run by Nebraska gave it an 11-6 advantage. Leading 14-10, the Huskers had four kills and were helped by three straight Panthers hitting errors during a 9-1 run that gave them a 19-11 lead. UNI got no closer than seven points the rest of the way, as Nebraska opened a two games to none advantage with a 30-16 win. The Huskers were even more effective offensively in the second game, hitting .464 (18-5-28) to .038 (9-8-26) for UNI.

Nebraska carried their momentum through game three, owning leads of 6-0, 10-1 and 19-4 en route to a 30-14 win and the match victory. The Huskers hit .406 (16-3-32) in the third game while UNI hit .083 (10-7-36).

With the win, Nebraska improves to 29-1, while UNI ends its season with a record of 28-8. The Huskers advance to next weekend's NCAA Sweet 16 in Gainesville, Fla., where they will face San Diego on Friday, Dec. 8.
