CARBONDALE, Ill. -

The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team topped Southern Illinois 3-0 (30-21, 30-21, 30-18) on Saturday in Carbondale, marking the 10th consecutive win and the seventh straight sweep for UNI. The win also gave UNI head coach Bobbi Petersen her 200th career victory.

After falling behind 13-9 in game one, UNI rallied to tie the game at 15-15. The Panthers slowly built a 21-18 advantage, but the Salukis were able to narrow the gap to 21-20. The Panthers outscored SIU 9-1 the rest of the way to win game one, 30-21. UNI hit .320 in the first game, committing just three errors on 50 attempts.

UNI scored first and led the entire way in game two, also winning that game by a 30-21 score.

Neither team held more than a one-point advantage in game three until UNI took a 9-7 lead. The Panthers built their lead to 14-9, and after SIU pulled within two at 14-12, the Panthers rattled off a 6-1 run that put them in front 20-13. UNI outscored the Salukis 10-5 the rest of the way to win the game 30-18.

Amy Sampson led the Panthers with 16 kills and Laura Rowan added 13. Kristin Belzung finished with 36 assists.


 

 

UNI is now 19-9 on the year, 13-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Salukis fall to 14-14 on the season, 6-10 in league action.

The Panthers return to action on Friday when they host Wichita State at 8 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
