UNI Sweeps Evansville

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Rachael Tink (Waterloo, Iowa) led all players with 12 kills to help lead the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Evansville tonight at the West Gym. Game scores were 30-28, 30-22 and 30-19. With the victory, UNI improved its all-time record against Evansville to a perfect 23-0. Tink added 11 digs and five blocks for the Panthers, who hit .321 as a team on the evening (52-17-109). Evansville hit just .083 (36-26-121), including -.087 in the third game (6-10-46). Junior middle blocker Stephanie Germann (LeMars, Iowa) had season-highs with eight kills six blocks. Germann had four of her kills and three blocks during a decisive 11-0 run in the third game that brought UNI from one point down (16-15) to a commanding 26-16 lead.
The first game was close throughout. The Panthers built a 21-17 edge, but Evansville fought back to tie the match at 26-all on an Erica Haukap service ace. After the teams traded points, the Purple Aces' Lacy Haller posted the final of her seven first-game kills to give UE a 28-27 advantage. UNI head coach Bobbi Petersen called a timeout, and the Panthers responded with back-to-back kills from Abby Lemek (Sioux City, Iowa) to take a 29-28 lead. Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) sealed the first game with a service ace. Lemek had six kills in the first game for UNI. UNI jumped out early in the second game, opening a 17-7 advantage, and Evansville got no closer than six points the rest of the way. The Panthers hit a sizzling .412 (18-4-34) in the second game alone, with Tink posting six kills. Shari Vermeer (Sioux Center, Iowa) had nine kills and Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) added seven for UNI. The Panthers recorded more kills (52-36), digs (48-38) and blocks (14.0-5.0) than the Aces on the night. With the win, the Panthers improve to 17-8 overall, 10-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Evansville falls to 11-15, 4-9 in conference. UNI hosts Southern Illinois tomorrow night (Nov. 6) at 7:00 p.m. It will be senior night at the West Gym, as the Panthers pay tribute to Shari Vermeer, Abby Lemek and Erin Hirsch. |
