Panther Track and Field Inks Five Recruits
Nov. 24, 2004 Cedar Falls, IA - University of Northern Iowa track and field signed five high school seniors this week, assistant coach Travis Geopfert announced today. These recruits will add to the already strong class of talent that has signed with UNI this year, including Val Crutchley of Cedar Rapids, IA, Greg Offerman of Charles City, IA and Caedryn Schrunk of Spirit Lake, IA. Lindsay Wiebers is a senior sprinter from Denison (IA) Schleswig High School. She is a three-time 3A state champion and finished third at the Drake Relays in the 100 meters. "We are extremely excited Lindsay is going to be joining our program," said Geopfert, head of UNI's recruiting efforts. "She is going to add great depth to our already strong sprint group, and should be able to come in and make an impact on our program right away. She is not only an exceptional athlete, but is also an outstanding student. Lindsay is going to be a great addition to the university."
Alyssa Fischer is a multi-events athlete from Cedar Rapids (IA) Kennedy High School. "Alyssa is a very versatile athlete that has exceptional potential as both a sprinter and jumper," said Geopfert. "Her potential in the high jump is definitely untapped and she has all of the tools to be a good multi-event athlete for us. She is another quality Iowa athlete that has the motivation and desire to compete at the Division I level." Kristi Green is a hurdler from Southern Cal Lake City High School. "Kristi is going to add quality depth to our hurdles crew," commented Geopfert. "Her enthusiasm about track and field is going to make our already strong hurdle program even better. Kristi is a small town Iowa athlete with a ton of potential in both the hurdles and as a potential heptathlete. We are very excited that Kristi has chosen to be a Panther." Courtney Landers will join UNI's squad as a thrower for the 2005-2006 season. Landers is a senior from Greene, Iowa. "Courtney is a multi-sport athlete with the overall athleticism it takes to be a good Division I thrower. She is going to fit in very well with our already strong throws program. Her attitude and drive to get better is exactly what we are looking for in our recruits. Courtney is a great addition to our program," Geopfert said. The final signee is Chris Anderson. Anderson is a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., attending Harrison High School. "Chris is an excellent track and field athlete," said Geopfert. "His versatility is the main thing that appealed to us. He can run anything from the 400 to a cross country 5K. He has the natural foot speed it takes to be an excellent middle distance runner at the Division I level. We are very excited that Chris is going to be joining our middle distance program. We are very strong in that area and he is going to add quality depth to the program." |
