Cedar Falls, Iowa. - The University of Northern Iowa women's swimming team dropped its second meet of the young season Saturday to Kansas, 180-80. The Jayhawks, swimming in their second meet in as many days, out-swam the Panthers in all but one of the 14 events.

Sophomore Amanda Firman (Cedar Falls, Iowa./Cedar Falls) won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.93 to secure the only victory for the Panther swimmers. Teammate Maggie Rickert (Hudson, Iowa./Cedar Falls) was the next best Panther in the race, with a fifth-place finish.

Sophomore Abby Girard (Cedar Falls, Iowa./Cedar Falls) finished second in both backstroke events. She finished just six-tenths of a second behind Jayhawk Danielle Herrmann in the 200-yard event.

Freshman Josie Itzen (Cedar Falls, Iowa./Cedar Falls) had another solid day, finishing second in 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley. Chasing Itzen in the 200-yard IM, teammates McKinzie Jacobs (Cedarville, Ill./Freeport) and Abby Moes (Sioux City, Ia./East) helped the Panthers finish second, third and fourth in the event and gained nine points for the team.

The only other Panther with a second-place finish was junior Katie Maloy (Auburn, Ind./R. Nelson Snider). Maloy raced her way to a time of 5:25.61 in the 500-yard freestyle event. Teammate April Mangrich (Cedar Rapids,Iowa./Jefferson) finished third in the event, just a second behind Maloy.

The Panthers will travel to Vermillion, S.D. for a dual meet against the University of South Dakota next Saturday, Oct. 27. The meet will start at 10 a.m. in the DakotaDome.
